The Montgomery County Department of Police received a distress call from the victim's mother at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday night, alerting them to an incident in the 3300 block of Hampton Point Drive.
When officers arrived, gunshots could be heard coming from the apartment, leading to deadly encounter.
Montgomery County Police initiated an emergency response (ERT), and SWAT responded to the location, while officers negotiated with the man until a decision was made to enter the apartment.
Once inside, SWAT engaged with the man, who was ultimately shot by officers. He was treated at the scene and rushed by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
His mother was unharmed.
The shooting and standoff is under investigation by the Maryland Attorney Genera's Independent Investigations Division.
